The 9th season of the IPL will start on 9th April with 6 old teams and 2 new teams battling for the VIVO IPL 2016 trophy. The opening match will feature last year’s winner Mumbai Indians against the new side Rising Pune Supergiants.
This season we will have two new franchises which will replace Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals. Both these teams have been suspended up to 2017 after the owners of these teams were found guilty of betting.
Two new teams are Gujarat Lions and Rising Pune Supergiants based in the cities of Rajkot and Pune respectively.
A total of 60 matches, including 56 league and 4 Playoff matches, will be played in Mumbai, Kolkata, Mohali, Bengaluru, Rajkot, Delhi, Hyderabad, Pune, Kanpur, Nagpur and Raipur. Pune and Bengaluru will host the Playoff matches for final. Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai will be the venue of the final to held on 29th May.

On 6th April 2016 the Bombay High Court questioned the “criminal wastage” of water being supplied to the three stadiums. Amid drought situation in the state of Maharashtra, three venues are supposed to host a total of 20 IPL matches.
